Barton Manor School: Topping Out Ceremony

Posted on: 25/05/2021

“Topping Out Ceremony” – Tuesday 25 May 2021

Barton Manor School (BMS), Barton Court Academy Trust’s new Free School, is celebrating the next phase of the School’s build project with a Topping Out Ceremony.

A plaque commemorating this stage of the project between Barton Court Academy Trust (BCAT), DfE, KCC with Kier Construction and Novium Architects has been commissioned and will be placed on the roof with stunning views of Canterbury Cathedral in the background.

The Topping Out Ceremony will take place with special VIP guests. Numbers have been restricted to adhere to the latest Covid-19 roadmap published by the Government. VIP guests include the Lord-Lieutenant of Kent, the Lady Colgrain, along with the Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Pat Todd, and local councillors.

BCAT Directors along with representatives from the DfE, KCC, and Kier will be in attendance to celebrate this very important milestone.

The build project is 50% through construction and is due to be completed in February 2022, with the School opening to 150 Y7 students in September 2022. BCAT are part-way through an S10 Consultation for the School, which provides an opportunity for BCAT to gain the views of prospective parents/carers and the local community of its plans before opening next year. The consultation closes on Tuesday 22 June at 9am. The consultation paper and feedback form are available on Barton Manor School’s website. www.bartonmanor.org/1234/consultation

BCATs Executive Headteacher who will also be Barton Manor School’s Headteacher when the school opens “This will be such a wonderful event and opportunity to share the success of the project so far with our guests and wider community. Kier and all parties involved in this project have worked tirelessly to make sure the School is delivered on time, and despite many challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, it is truly amazing that we are able to celebrate this stage of the build process today with important guests”

Dr Bill Speed, BCAT Chair, “This is a very exciting opportunity for BCAT to provide a learning experience for students of all abilities following a mixture of academic and vocational subjects.  The facilities are truly outstanding and we are looking forward to completing the project on schedule, welcoming the first students in September 2022.  We hope the school will provide facilities for, not only Barton Manor students, but also the wider Canterbury community.

Shellina Prendergast, Kent County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education and Skills, said: “The Trust’s commitment to deliver quality-first teaching, with a focus on equalities and inclusion, in a modern and well-equipped building, will provide significant opportunities for pupils and contribute towards making Kent a county that works for all children and young people. Kent County Council is pleased to have worked in collaboration with a range of our partners to support the building of this new school.”
