History Comes to Life: Year 7 Explore St Augustines Abbey
Posted on: 16/10/2026On Tuesday 14 October, our Year 7 students enjoyed a fantastic visit to St Augustine's Abbey, where they were able to bring their learning about the Norman period to life.
The day began with a guided tour of the Abbey, during which students explored the history of the site, and learned about the important events and people connected to it. They discovered how St Augustine's Abbey became one of the most significant religious centres in medieval England and gained a deeper understanding of its historical importance.
Students then investigated the Abbey's fascinating links to the Bayeux Tapestry, examining the evidence that suggests the tapestry may have been created at the abbey. This provided an exciting opportunity for students to engage with historical evidence and consider how historians reach conclusions about the past.
Throughout the day, our students were a credit to the School. They were exceptionally well behaved, engaged fully with all activities and asked thoughtful questions. Their enthusiasm for learning greatly impressed the English Heritage staff, who praised the group for their maturity, curiosity and positive attitude.
As a result of the visit, students will now begin an exciting collaborative project to create their own collective version of the Bayeux Tapestry. Once completed, this piece of work will be displayed at St Augustine's Abbey, allowing students to make their own contribution to the interpretation and celebration of this important historical site.
We are extremely proud of how our Year 7 students represented the School and look forward to seeing their impressive tapestry project take shape in the coming weeks.
