Year 9 Triple Science Students Explore Nature at the 2026 Bugs, Birds and Botany Bioblitz
Posted on: 22/06/2026Year 9 Triple Science students recently took part in the exciting 2026 Bugs, Birds and Botany Bioblitz at Canterbury Christ Church University.
Despite the very hot weather, students began the day with a short walk to the university campus before immersing themselves in a full programme of hands-on scientific activities and outdoor exploration.
The Bioblitz gave students the opportunity to experience biology beyond the classroom through a combination of fieldwork, laboratory investigation and scientific recording.
During the fieldwork sessions, students explored local urban biodiversity, identifying native plants and observing local wildlife directly in their natural environment. This allowed them to develop practical ecological skills while gaining a deeper appreciation for the biodiversity found in everyday surroundings.
Students then moved into the university laboratories, where they took part in hands-on microscopy sessions using university-grade microscopes to examine live biological samples. This provided valuable insight into scientific techniques used in higher education and professional research.
A further highlight of the day was the opportunity to contribute to real scientific data collection. Students practised accurate biological drawing and recorded observations that supported ongoing ecological research projects, experiencing first-hand how scientific field data can contribute to wider environmental understanding.
The trip was an engaging and memorable experience that brought science to life and gave students an excellent opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a university setting. Well done to all Year 9 Triple Science students for their enthusiasm, resilience in the hot weather and excellent participation throughout the day.
